William III 1700 Guinea, second head

William III (1694-1702), gold Guinea, 1700, second laureate head right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GVLIELMVS. III. DEI. GRA., rev. crowned cruciform shields, plain sceptres in angles, Lion of Nassau as an escutcheon at centre, date either side of top crown, abbreviated Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, .MAG BR.FRA ET.HIB REX., edge milled, weight 8.37g (MCE 184; Schneider 505; Farey 430; Bull EGC 423; Spink 3460). Lightly worn on high points, toned, surface marks, some flecking on reverse, about very fine.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "William the Third by the Grace of God" and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

The 1700 calendar year had an output of just £120,212 worth of gold struck into coin, the lowest of William III's reign.
