* The Foundation of Constantinople, Ae3.
*Time of Constantine the Great, c. AD 330, Ae3 celebrating the foundation of Constantinople.
When Constantine the Great founded Constantinople in AD 330 he immediately, and for several years following, started issuing commemorative coins to celebrate the new capital of the Roman Empire. Featuring the personification of the city of Constantinople on the obverse and Victory on the prow of a ship on the reverse, this commemorative coin draws on a classic design from the ancient world. Since the literature of Ancient Greece the ship of state had been used as a metaphor to symbolize the importance of government and the stability of a nation. Here Constantine the Great shows us Victory, leading the ship, maintaining the power and direction of the Empire from its new centre, Constantinople.
