Muwahhid, Square Dirham, Seville

Islamic Spain, Muwahhid, anonymous square silver Dirham, Ishbiliya (Seville), no date (AH 558-646 / 1163-1248 AD), 1.48g (Album 497; Hazard 1106). Good very fine, rare.

Struck at Seville, the Muwahhid capital in Spain. Album notes that for over 400 years the Islamic convention of dating coins was almost completely absent in Spain. While the overall date range for this anonymous series ends in AD 1269, that includes coins minted in North Africa. Seville fell to Ferdinand III of Castile on 22 December 1248.
