James II (1685-88), silver Penny, 1685, laureate head left, toothed outer border, Latin legend reads IACOBVS. II. DEI. GRATIA., rev. crowned mark of value, date in legend, reads MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX, weight 0.66g (Bull. 810; ESC.2293; Robinson p.150:78; S.3417). Clear fields some reverse toning spots, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as AU58, scarce.
NGC certification 6946209-010, currently the only example graded and therefore the finest at NGC.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James the Second, by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
The 1685 Threepence and penny are the only small silver coins of this date with no maundy set available.
