George VI (1936-52),gold Proof Sovereign, 1937, bare head left, initials HP below neck for Humphrey Paget, GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP:rev.St George and dragon right, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue, edge plain, (Hill 296B; Bentley 365; WR 439; EGC.1456; S.4076).Deep tone, mirrored fields, some trivial contact marks, portrait superb. Graded by NGC as PF64 Cameo, a bold problem free example of the only Sovereign available in the reign.

The Latin legends translate as on obverse "George the Sixth by the grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India."

These plain edge Proof gold Sovereigns were produced to celebrate the Coronation of King George VI on the 12thMay 1937 as part of gold Proof sets, with a mintage of 5,501 pieces, they were technically patterns as they did not have a milled edge like other gold Sovereigns. Mintage - 5501 struck.
