George III 1765 Threepence AU58, the rarest and key date for this reign R4

George III (1760-1820),silver Threepence, 1765, young laureate and draped bust right, legend surrounds, GEORGIVS. III. DEI. GRATIA.,rev.crowned mark of value, date either side of crown, legend reads .MAG. BRI. FR. ET. HIB. REX., weight 1.56g (Bull.2257 R4; ESC.2035; Robinson p.160:248; S.3753).Toned, good very fine, graded by NGC AU58. The key date in the series, recorded as R4.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "George III by the Grace of God," and on reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

Robinson notes there was a delivery to the Mint Office on 27th March 1765 of 808 Twopences, 537 Threepences and 310 Fourpences, which if it is assumed they were all dated 1765 is the total output for this year of the small silver.

There are no silver pennies of this date and therefore no maundy sets.
