Fountain of Neptune, Bologna.

Pius IV, Medici (1560 - 1565), the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, cast Bronze Medal with trace of silvering, unsigned, undated (c. 1567), bust right, PIVS. IIII. PONTIFEX MAX., rev. the fountain, AQVA PIA, 33mm. Fine, rare.

Part of a larger project of urban regeneration the Fountain of Neptune was originally called the Aqva Pia in honour of Pius IV. It was designed by the architect Tommaso Laureti and executed by Giambologna. Giambologna had previously submitted a model for the Fountain of Neptune in Florence. He was not awarded that commission but is said to have contributed to the construction of Bartolomeo Ammannati's winning design.
