Elizabeth I gold Crown, seventh coinage, initial mark 2

Elizabeth I (1558-1603), gold Crown Seventh issue, struck in 22-carat Crown Gold, initial mark 2, (1602), bust 8C, elaborate crowned bust left with long hair flowing from base of the ruff, ornate pelleted and lozenged bust, toothed inner borders both sides, pellet stops both sides, reads ELIZAB D.G ANG. FRA. ET. HIB. REGI., rev. crowned square-topped shield with E and R either side, legend surrounds SCVTVM FIDEI PROTEGET EA, weight 2.80g (Brown & Comber H24; Schneider 817; N.2010; S.2541). Struck on an irregular flan with some of the usual striking impressions and minimal softness in parts of legend, a bold good very fine with a first-rate portrait, we can only trace four examples of this mint mark for this denomination in private hands.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Elizabeth by the Grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland" and on the reverse as "the shield of faith shall protect her."
