Charles II (1660-85), silver Halfcrown of Thirty Pence, second hammered issue (1661), engraved by Thomas Simon, crowned bust left, value XXX in field behind, legend with outer toothed border only surrounding both sides, initial mark crown both sides, CAROLVS. II. D: G: MAG: BRIT: FRA: ET. HIB: REX,rev. long cross fourchée over quartered shield of arms, .CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO., weight 14.73g (Bull 286 R5; ESC 450; N.2760 VR; S.3313).Uneven tone and weakly struck on design though not as weakly as usual with some bust detail evident, reverse clearer, good fine to almost very find for issue and extremely rare as a very short lived issue.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland"; and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ."

The silver output for the calendar year of 1661 was a mere £23,201 covering five denominations from Halfcrown to silver Penny.

We note a better struck example with the same obverse die sold at a London auction in 2019 for £30,000 hammer.
