Regular price £950
Regular price Sale price £950

Charles II (1660-85),silver Twopence, struck on a large flan in error, 1679, laureate and draped bust right, latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA,rev. two crowned interlocking Cs, date either side of crown, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX, weight 1.17g (Bull 694; Robinson p148: 55 [iv]; plate 49 - this coin; S.3388). Deep rich tone, raised die flaw in King's hair with impressive overall detail, excessively rare given its execution on a large flan. Encapsulated and graded by NGC as AU58, of the highest rarity with only two examples known.

NGC certification 6769181-004, presumably the only graded example with "large flan" on the label.

Robinson notes in 'Silver Pennies and Linen Towels' p.148, entry 55 'two specimens known' of the twopence on a large flan. On plate 49 an illustration and juxtaposition of the standard flan twopence of 1679 and the larger flan. The weight of a standard 1679 twopence is circa 1.0g, our example being 1.17g, a clear reflection of the larger planchet employed.

Provenance:

This coin illustrated in "Silver Pennies and Linen Towels" by Dr Brian Robinson, No.49 in the plates in a comparison with a regular Twopence of 1679.
