Anne (1702-14), gold Guinea, 1703, VIGO. below draped bust facing left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, ANNA. DEI. GRATIA. rev. inverted dies axis, crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, rose at centre, date either side of top crown, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, .MAG BR. With attractive tone, red colouration more on reverse, a few light surface marks, otherwise practically very fine with a good very fine reverse, extremely rare.

The Vigo gold coins are amongst the rarest and hardest currency gold coins to obtain. The Guinea is the rarest of the three Vigo denominations and the last time one was on the open marketplace was this example's last outing at public auction in 2007. Incidentally that auction represented only the third time we are aware of that all three denominations were offered for sale in one auction.

Provenance:

Ex Baldwin Hong Kong Auction 42, 30th August 2007, lot 1099.

This coin was from an old private collection that was formed in the 1920s up until 1935.
